The call for workshop proposals for The EMBO Meeting 2011 has now closed, however please find the submission guidelines below for your information.
Workshops
Each year, 21 workshops are held as part of the scientific programme of The EMBO Meeting. The workshops are programmed over three days with 7 concurrent workshops per day. Each workshop is allocated 2.5 hours and is required to address new perspectives and scientific issues around a coherent topic of interest to a broad audience.
Six speakers - including one or two chairpersons and two speakers chosen from the submitted abstracts - can be accommodated. Each speaker should not exceed 30 minutes (including discussion); speakers selected from abstracts may be limited to 15 minutes each.
Single workshops may be proposed; a series of related workshops held over consecutive days during the conference may also be proposed. Please indicate the related workshops in the online submission of your proposal.
Who can propose a workshop?
Proposals are welcomed from scientists working in both academic and industry settings. Young scientists are strongly encouraged to participate actively in The EMBO Meeting. One of the selected workshops will be reserved for organization by PhD students and post-doc groups.
Workshop topics
Workshop proposals are invited from scientists who have ideas on new perspectives on any life science topic of interest to broad audiences. The conference organizers are looking for quality sessions covering novel developments in both mainstream as well as not-so-mainstream subject areas, in both basic and applied life science research.
Unless there are considerable advances in a specific field, topics that have been covered the previous year at The EMBO Meeting will not be selected. Please review the programme for the 2010 conference in Barcelona before determining topics and speakers for your proposed workshop.
The proposal must clearly state the
-
scientific purpose and content of the workshop
-
choice of speakers and reasons for selecting each speaker
-
novelty and scientific interest in the context of life science research.

Speakers
Proposers are generally expected to chair the workshop. Before submission of the proposal, proposers are required to obtain consent of the proposed speakers. The EMBO Speakers office will formally invite the speakers following announcement of the successful workshop proposals.
EMBO expects a mix of speakers from Europe and overseas and encourages proposers to consider junior group leaders as well as scientists with non-conventional views. A reasonable gender balance in all workshops is expected.
To ensure that the programme remains attractive for participants year-on-year, we ask proposers not to invite speakers who have presented at The EMBO Meeting in the year prior to the call year.
Please review the programme for the 2010 conference in Barcelona before determining topics and speakers for your proposed workshop.
EMBO will cover accommodation and travel costs for speakers (not including speakers selected from abstracts) and EMBO will also make the appropriate bookings.

Selection
The proposals are reviewed and selected by the organizers and The EMBO Meeting Committee.
The criteria for selection are the scientific interest of the topic for a broad audience and the achievements and qualification of the proposed speakers. The balance of themes and topics throughout the conference will be considered in determining successful proposals.
